CHAPTER 2


·         Understanding Dialog happening in work place.

1.       Making And Handling Reservation (Membuat dan menangani pemesanan)
a.       Expressions used in making reservations
·         I’d like to reserve a room / a table/ a ticket/ a seat/ ..for this weekend
·         I want to book a single / double room.
·         How much is a single room per night ?
·         What is the rate for a single room ?
·         May I pay by check ?
·         Do you receive a credit card ?
·         Can I reserve a table for two for dinner tonight ?
·         Is there any flight to Hongkong at 2 pm on Saturday ?
·         Could you mention the exact date ?


b.      Expressions used for handling reservations
·         Good morning. Pati Hotel May I help you ?
·         Yes sir, what kind/ sort of room do you need.?
·         When will you stay/ when will you be staying ?
·         I’m sorry madam,We are fully booked.
·         It’s  Rp. 500.000 per night plus 15 % tax.
·         When will you be flying ?
·         I’m sorry all rooms have been booked.
·         May I have your name / address/ number ?
·         You are confirmed sir/madam.

·         How would you intend to pay ?

Hotel Clerk: Hello. Sunnyside Inn. May I help you?
Man: Yes, I'd like to reserve a room for two on the 21st of March.
Hotel Clerk: Okay. Let me check our computer here for a moment. The 21st of May, right?
Man: No. March, not May.
Hotel Clerk: Oh, sorry. Let me see here. Hmmm.
Man: Are you all booked that night?
Hotel Clerk: Well, we have one suite available, complete with a kitchenette and a sauna bath. And the view of the city is great, too.
Man: How much is that?
Hotel Clerk: It's only $200 dollars, plus a 10% room tax.
Man: Oh, that's a little too expensive for me. Do you have a cheaper room available either on the 20th or the 22nd?
Hotel Clerk: Well, would you like a smoking or a non-smoking room?
Man: Non-smoking, please.
Hotel Clerk: Okay, we do have a few rooms available on the 20th; we're full on the 22nd, unless you want a smoking room.
Man: Well, how much is the non-smoking room on the 20th?
Hotel Clerk: $80 dollars, plus the 10% room tax.
Man: Okay, that'll be fine.
Hotel Clerk: All right. Could I have your name, please?
Man: Yes. Bob Maexner.
Hotel Clerk: How do you spell your last name, Mr. Maexner?
Man: M-A-E-X-N-E-R.
Hotel Clerk: Okay, Mr. Maexner, we look forward to seeing you on March 20th.
Man: Okay. Goodbye.

Activity 2. Read the following dialogue carefully !

·         Reserving a room by phone
·         X : Pati Hotel Good morning.
·         Y : Good morning. My name is Budi. I’d like to make a reservation for next month. Is that possible ?
·         X : Could you mention the exact date ? I’d also like to know how many rooms you need ?
·         Y : Of course. I need two double rooms and we’ll be there for three nights from 12th until 15th  of   
·               February.
·         X : Fine. Wait a moment please. I’ll check  it  for you.  (After checking ) You are confirmed Mr. Budi. You
·              reserve 2 double rooms for three nights from 12th until 15th next month.
·         Y : That’s right.
·         X : Mr. Budi, may I have your full name and address ?
·         Y : Sure. The name is Budi Haryanto and the address is Jl. P. Diponegoro No. 14 Pati. Did you get that ?
·         X : Yes. Mr. Budi Haryanto, Jl. P. Diponegoro No. 14 Pati. Could you give me your telephone number ?
·         Y : 081325762443
·         X : 081325762443. Thank you.
·         Y: By the way, what’s the rate for a double room ?
·         X : Rp.500.000 per night plus 21 % tax.
·         Y : That’s OK. Thank you very much.
·         X : You’re welcome Mr. Budi. We’re looking forwards to seeing you. Good bye.








2.       Making and Handling complaints (Menyampaikan dan Menangani Keluhan)
a.       Expressions used for making complaints
·         Excuse me I’d like to make a complaint .
·         I think there’s a mistake in our bill.
·         I am sorry to say but I am not satisfied with …
·         I am dissastisfied with your …
·         I am a bit disappointed with….
·         It’s not really what we want.
·         I want to speak to the manager.

b.      Expressions used for handling complaints
·         I am sorry sir. I guarrantee it won’t happen again
·         I am sorry sir but it is already mentioned in the brocure.
·         Thank you sir. We are happy to receive any complaint.
·         I’m sorry madam. I’ll have the cashier check the bill.
·         I’m sorry sir. I’ll have someone fix the problem right away.

3.       Making arrangement. (Membuat janjian)
·           Can we meet after lunch ?
·           I’d like to make an appointment to see the manager at 5 pm.
·           Could I speak to …?
·           Would I be able to have an arrangement to see you tomorrow at 10?
·           Certainly/ sure / of course
·           Would you be able to come on Friday at 9 ?
·           Yes that’s fine.
·           I am not available at 10
·           I am sorry I am not free at that time. Could you suggest another time ?

4.       Confirming and Cancelling reservation / arrangement (Menegaskan dan Membatalkan pesanan/ janjian)
a.       Confirming arrangement/ reservation
·         I would like to confirm my arrangement/ reservation
·         I need to confirm my booking
·         I want to confirm my ticket

6.       Conditional Sentences
CONDITIONAL SENTENCES
(Kalimat bersyarat/ Pengandaian)
Type I       :   IF + S + VERB I ….., S + WILL/ SHALL  + VERB I
Type II     :   IF + S + VERB II …, S + WOULD/SHOULD + VERB I
Type III    :   IF + S + HAD + VERB III …, S + WOULD / SHOULD + HAVE + VERB III
Example of Type I:
1.       Muna will have a birthday party next week.
Our responses :
·         If she invites me, I will come
·         If she invites me, I will give her a nice gift
·         If she doesn’t invite me, I will be angry
Example of Type II
1.       Boby is having a  wedding party in Pati Hotel now. He doesn’t invite me.
Our response  :
·         If he invited me, I would come.
2.       I am not The Indonesian President.
Our imagination :
·         If I were  The President, I would build an airport in Pati
Example Of Type III
1.       Last night Ida had a party. She didn’t invite me.
Your imagination :
·         If she had invited me, I would have come

Exercise ! Build into Conditional sentences I, II, III !

Type I    : We will become clever if we study hard
Type II  : We would become clever if we studied hard

2.       If You (practise) hard you (be) skillful.
Type 1 : If you practise hard, You will be skillful.

Type 3 : If you had practised hard, you would have been skillful.

Type 1 : they will arrive at there at 3 pm if they catch the 5 am train.
Type 2 : they would arrive at there at 3 pm if they caught the 5 am train.
Type 3 : they would have arriveds at there at 3 am if they had caught  the 5 am train.

Type 1 : if he isn’t sick he will play with us
Type 2 : if he were not sick he would play with us
Type 3 : if he had not been  sick he would have played with us
7.       If he ( have) a car  she (love ) him
Type 1 : if he has a car she will love him

Type 3 : if he had had a car she would have loved him
8.       If the car (be not) broken, we (not walk)
Type 1: If the car is not broken, we will not walk
Type 2: If the car were not broken, we should not walk
Type 3: If the car hadn’t  been  broken, we should nothave walked
9.       If you (work) hard, you (be) wealthy.
Type 1: If you work hard, you will be wealthy
Type 2: If you worked hard, you would be wealthy
Type 3: If you had worked hard, you would have been wealthy
10.   If the weather (be) bad, the flight (be) delayed
Type 1 :If the weather is bad the flight will be delayed
Type 2 :If the wether were bad the flight would be delayed
Type 3 :If the weather had been bad the flight would have been delayed

Conditional Sentence without “IF”
1.       Unless   = If…..not
a.       If you don’t come, I won’t either.
= Unless you  come, I won’t either.
b.      If he doesn’t have the invitation, he won’t come
= Unless he has the invitation, he won’t come
c.       If she didn’t leave early, she would miss the train
= Unless she left early, she would miss the train.
2.        If    …..were       = Were…..    (conditional Sentence Type II)
a.       If you were here, you would meet her.
= Were you here, you would meet her.
b.      If she were not sick, she would go.
Were she not sick, she would go
3.       If ….had  + Verb III  ..  = Had …….Verb III   (Conditional Sentence Type III)
a.       If they had worked hard, they would have been rich.
= Had they worked hard, they would have been rich.



Subjunctives
(Pengharapan)

…..wish                        = …berharap jika saja…
….if only                      = jika saja..
….as if/as though        = seolah- olah
Would rather               = lebih suka..

Study the following examples and pay close attention to the red underlined parts !

1.       Fact                        : I am not rich (Simple Present)
Subjunctive        : I wish I were rich (Simple Past)
                                  If only I were rich
                                  My wife wishes I were rich
                                  My wife would rather I were rich.
2.       Fact                        : I don’t have much money (Simple Present )
Subjunctive        : I wish I had a lot of money (Simple Past )
                                   If only I were rich
3.       Fact                        : She will go tomorrow (Present Future)
Subjunctive        : If only she wouldn’t go tomorrow (Past Future)
                                  I wish she would stay longer with us (Past Future)
4.       Fact                        : I was absent yesterday (Past Tense)
Subjunctive        : I wish I hadn’t been absent yesterday (Past Perfect)
5.       Fact                        : Mother has been sick for two days. (Present Perfect)
Subjunctive        : We wish she hadn’t been sick.               (Past Perfect)
6.       Fact                        : She doesn’t know about the accident (Simple Present)
Subjunctive        : She acts as if she knew  it. (Past Tense)
7.       Fact                        : He were not rich. (Simple Past)
Subjunctive        : He pretended as though he had been a millionaire. (Past Perfect)

Note :
1.       The meaning of the subjunctive is contrary to the fact,
2.       Tense used in Subjunctive is the past form of tense used in the fact
